Green Building

“Green” building encompasses certifications one can get on a build project according to how airtight the project is. The goal of Green building is to keep all the toxins inside the home in order to protect the environment. Some green builds might include recycled products, or other environmentally friendly materials, but again: the goal is to consider and protect the environment.

LowTox Building

“LowTox” building may use some environmentally friendly products, but the goal is to minimize toxin exposure to the people living or working in the space once it is complete. Many building materials (paint, adhesives, MDF, insulation, etc.) are toxic to humans and stay in your home for years after the project is complete. The process by which the toxins leak from products into your air is called “off-gassing.” The state of California limits and places warnings on many of these products, as they are known to be cancer causing.

In Texas, many contractors still believe that the safer products are of lower quality. While that may have been true initially, it is no longer the case. Summey Industries will *only* use water-based paints, in order to protect both subcontractors and clients, but upgrades to LowTox materials are recommended and available, at the owner’s discretion.

When building his own home, Summey Industries President Tim used only LowTox materials. Anyone can benefit from these methods and products, but those who have health issues receive particular benefit.
